Vinland, Autumn, and more Hard Work
It's been a busy weekend... Pretty much all my free time has been sucked into house-prep. I need to get a lot done, and I feel like I am working hard, but it energy-draining, soul-sucking work. Plus, the respiratory issue I've been fighting has been slowing me down. Since I was still not ready at 4:30AM and starting to get upset about it, I had to cancel the house photo shoot for today.  All in all, I'm not making as much progress as I would like. *sigh*

Friday night I drove down to Chicago, stopped by IKEA to pick up some big girl dishes and then went to the opening lecture for the Vinland Seminar. They also introduced the presenters for the next day and one of them was a biological sciences dude working with Norse DNA in Britain who happened to mention that it was a FT Wainwright book that got him interested in the topic. I talked to him a bit since Wainwright is one of the big figures in Pictish studies (his "Problem of the Picts" kicked off the modern study of the Picts.) It was a lovely lecture but ran a little later than I'd thought and by the time I got to my brother's house, we were both pretty tired.

I crashed on the couch and Danny sat on the loveseat messing around on his computer since he's in an insomnia phase. Even though I warned him about my coughing jags, he was still pretty alarmed when I went off at 4AM or so. He got up to get me a glass of water too quickly and - quick movement being one of our pain triggers - we both were interesting disasters for a little bit. :P

Saturday was the conference - the morning was a little disappointing, but I met some nice folks in the coffee breaks. At lunch time, I'd thought I'd backtrack to one of the local ethnic places I'd passed on the way in. I walked back to a place that had a non-English sign. I'm not sure what I had, but it was some mammal in a pita with an interesting sauce and pickled something. Nummy. The afternoon session was more satisfying with presentations on L'Anse aux Meadows and Viking DNA. Very fun. And! Birgitta Wallace was there, so I spoke with her and I hopehopehope she really will follow up with me about some of the questions I had about her research. *crosses fingers*

I was supposed to do dinner with Danny, but he was not feeling up to it, so I returned to Madison and worked on the house until late. Sunday I slept in, then went to the Harvest Moot. I got there late, but it was nice to be a little social. The evening plans sort of fell apart, but I talked to my momma and puttered about. I need to get some things done before bed, but I think Ii should be able to manage it.

Tomorrow is my "Friday" since my coworker needed off this Friday, so I have off on Monday instead. Yardwork must be done and some other minor improvements/repairs are needed. In the evening, Blue is coming to help me deport some things to Sol's house. Wish me luck.

In Alaska there is an Army base called "FT Wainwright". I had to read that paragraph twice to realize you were discussing an author, and not that base...
