Christmas comes early for Dr Jean

Yay! Yay! Yay!

Two bits of happiness this week! First, the FDA banned those stoopid energy drink & alcohol combinations. (Not that this stops dumb people from mixing them themselves, but it's a start.)

Then, today, the manufacturer of propoxyphene agreed to remove it from the market. Propoxyphene has long been on my if-I-ran-the-FDA-I'd-BAN-it list. Merry Christmas to me! :D

Lucky you! Congratulations - not that I actually know anything about the drug but if you're happy then I'm happy for you!

It has all the bad effects of opioids (addiction, tolerance, constipation, etc) but has never been proven to be a better pain reliever than acetaminophen... wit it's FUN so it's hard to get people off of it. The fact that it induces sometimes-lethal heart rhythm abnormalities finally killed it.

Huh. I used to have that prescribed for me often - and rarely took it (I have a high pain threshold). Now I'm glad. I hadn't been aware of the controversy and at the time I was supposed to be using it, I regularly had episodes of PAT, SVT, and VT - so that would have sucked! (Cured now. Horrah for ablations.)

Yikes! Yes, I'm very glad you didn't take it often!

I love happy-making things! Yeah! Glad it is an early present for you....I had no idea that the drinks were a problem, thought they were weird and silly but then people do a lot of weird and stupid things and create markets for this stuff.

The issue is that they get a "wide-awake drunk" and do either extra-special-stoopid things or get much drunker than they thing and get dead.

Has Avandia made it to your personal chopping block yet? The dietitian was surprised my doc is still prescribing it.

:P I don't like any of the glitizones and I keep waiting for Avandia to be pulled. Maybe for my birthday? ;)

Not to harsh your mellow, but it doesn't look like the FDA is actually *banning* the alcohol-laced energy drinks. The makers of 4 of them got warning letters, but it doesn't say "stop selling this" it says "stop marketing it as completely safe or else we'll take it all away from you." And I don't see the Sparks drinks on the list either, so maybe that brand just doesn't have as high an alcohol content as the others?

But yay on the propoxyphene! I actually saw that earlier and forwarded it to some other folks I thought would be interested :)

It is probably just based on the list of drinks against which complaints were filed. True, it's not an outright ban - that was too strong a word - but based on the way it was worded, there's going to be little or no way for them to keep the product on the market with the current formulation/strength, at least.

When I saw the article yesterday about the propoxyphene ban, the first thing I thought was "Jean will be thrilled."

And indeed I was. :)
