This weekend we held the Griffin Needle Challenge in Jararvellir and, now that I have slept a bit, I would like to offer a report and thanks. Apologies for any inaccuracies or omissions – some details doubtless have escaped me from tiredness…

We had nine teams compete in the Challenge. In the Intermediate category, we had the Handmaidens (and Huscarl) of Doom created a reproduction of the Skjoldeham find, the Flying Monkeys created an Italian gown, and the Byzantine Bobbins created their interpretation of Theodora’s outfit from the mosaic at Ravenna. In the Advanced category, Their Royal Highnesses’ Pleasure took on TWO outfits, making a gown and sideless surcoat for Her Highness and matching outfit for His Highness, and the House of Thornes sewed a German woman’s outfit. Lastly, in the Pyxis Division, Oni-Saru made a man’s Japanese outfit, G Force: Death, Dark, Blood made outfit including a coat and jupon _also_ for His Highness, Equestrians and Company created a Middle Eastern woman’s outfit, and Rusty Nails and Regular Beatings created a Pictish woman’s outfit.

There are already pictures up on Facebook and I am sure Shava will have hers up shortly.

First, I would like to thank my staff. Thanks to Shava and her staff who manned the gate and to the gate staff, Greta, Josceline and the others who acted as chatelaines as our presence garnered attention from all the hotel guests who came to Madison for the Badger’s Homecoming game and were surprised to find a sewing competition. Greatest thanks to Iohanna and her food-prep helpers - we were well fed all night and all day with tasty, nutritious, low-stain potential options and lots of munchies. Special thanks to the Judges – Ivan Matfeevich Rezansky, Robert the Stout, Roxelana Bramante, Cassandra of the Western Green, Marwen, and Niccolo Falconetto. In many ways, I think your jobs were the hardest! Lastly, thank you to all the competitors! This event, by definition, cannot happen without you. It was an exhausting, insane, AMAZING time and I hope you all had as good a time as I did!

Oh, and while winning is not the point of the Challenge, the winner in each division is listed last in the above list. There were small prizes for the winners, but the real prize is the bragging rights, so congrats to Byzantine Bobbins, House of Thornes, and Rusty Nails and Regular Beatings!

For those of you who were unable to make it, you missed a wonderful event and a great display of the talents we have among us. Take a look at the pictures, talk to the folks who competed, and consider joining us next year!

Once again, thank you all… Now I’m off to sleep…

17 September 2009 @ 01:55 am

It’s been a fortnight or more since I posted anything of consequence, so this is a general update-y post because it has been a busy few weeks.

On the last weekend of August, I traveled up to Windhaven with [info]roxelana0com . They were hosting an Arts and Sciences Day - she was asked to teach C&I and I was asked to teach Research and Documentation. The class ran somewhat longer than it usually does, but there were a lot of questions and a lot of newer folks with a genuine interest in research. Squee!

When I got home, my mom came to visit, sadly not for a joyful reason. One of her best friends from college, the lady I was named after, in fact, had died rather suddenly. She had lived in McFarland, so my place was a good place to crash for the night before going to the funeral Monday morning. Unfortunately, I had a down-to-the-wire report to do at work, so I was not able to attend with her.

At the very end of the month, I found out at a particular Viking from Border Downs lost his job and so resolved to move to Madison. The loss of the job does not precisely please me, but I am looking forward to the relocation.

I am a spoiled girl and I have a ton of vacation, so when I realized that I could use 16 hours of PTO to avoid 18 hours of driving, I decided to go to Gimli, but then stay out in the West until Coronation. The original plan was to go out with TRM and return with TRM, but not the same people. ;) For a variety of reasons, I ended up coming back with [info]cass_lee , though.

TRM dropped me off in Fargo and I joined [info]missdoom and Mr S for the rest of the trip north. We stopped at the Hjemkomst Center since I’d never been there. It was neat to see the reconstruction of a Viking Ship that sailed to Norway in the 80’s but it was sort of disappointing to see all the modern stuff they left on the decks. And of course they wouldn’t let you get on board either. :P I actually liked the Viking Stave Church even better, I think. It was just gorgeous and I really wish we had geekage like that in Madison. Thanks in part to a fellow we met over the weekend, we are probably going to go up for the Viking weekend at the museum next June. Mmmmm… geeking en masse.

This was my first Gimli and it was a very good time… except for the mosquitos! Yipes! I swear they were swarming in the thousands! I didn’t really do much at the event other than hang out with folks and socialize and drink and sew. Granted, I did a lot of each of those! In all, a nice long weekend.

The week between Gimli and Coronation passed quickly, with sewing, a trip to Vermillion to pester Count Hagan for part of a project, sewing, a day up in Aberdeen, and more sewing. However, on the drive up to Fargo I discovered that even I have a limit and deciding to add 40’ of last-minute extra sewing was just too much for my shoulder. Hurray for back squishes, vitamin I, hot tubs, and Scotch!

Coronation went well and smoothly, at least as far as I could tell. [info]sirzig and [info]mightyjesse were safely installed as our next King and Queen and they were predictably adorable and squishy. The garb was done and looked pretty good. (All wool, silk, or linen, handsewn, hand embroidered, blah, blah, blah...) Thanks to the folks from Korsvag who wove all the trim on short notice! The weather was beautiful, if a tad too warm, but there was fighting to be had outdoors and all sorts of crafts indoors. I was a good little muffin and didn’t sew anything, but I did work a bit on an illumination that [info]mysie drew and let me color. Yay! Coloring!

Saturday night there was much merrymaking and talking well into the night. It was a hard, hard thing to get up and leave early Sunday morning. [info]cass_lee was merciful enough to allow me a waking-up waffle, but then we were on the road. I didn’t stay awake as much as I should have, largely due to the late night and the lack of homecoming project. Once back in Madison, we made a quick stop at my place, pitched out my stuff from the weekend, and then proceeded to Don G’s birthday party. Ooof. It was fun, but I didn’t even last until 10PM before I needed to bail and get to bed.

Luckily, I still had Monday off to recover. I also did a ton of laundry, cleaned the garage with [info]devikat , had the Sears contractors over for an estimate and a guy over to tune the piano, so it was not a complete slacker day, but it was relaxing and ended with a lovely dinner with Blue.

Whew! Busy, but happy!

Well, WW is set to begin in about seven hours... The site looks great and everything seems ready to go.

Thus far, the biggest challenges have been weather related - it has been damp and COLD. :/ I didn't get my Authentic Encampment signs done because it was taking so long for the paint to dry between coats. Oh well, I hope to finish them tomorrow... I really am pleased out of my stoopid mind with the Authentic Encampment - I have a nice perimeter of little blue flags around the few canvas tents that are already here - I can't wait til all the residents arrive...

Speaking of encampments, I'm pretty happy with my personal one as well. This is the first year I'm not camping with someone and/or not filling my tent with Baronial crap. I made the command decision to leave the event-related crap (a half-carload, mind you, plus the High Seat in goldfrog's van) in the car until it is needed. Therefore, I only have a small amount of stuff in the tent, everything visible is period or period-ish, and everything is well-organized. It's very cozy. It will be even better when my "living room set" arrives tomorrow...

Now, if it were just not so cold... Even on my featherbed, nestled in my flock of sheep, it's a little chilly. A (liquid) nightcap will help but I really need to work on a noggin-covering nightcap and other tent-warming luxuries...

But for now, sleep. My day starts early, with the first two Troll shifts.

It's been a busy extended weekend...

Thursday night, I hosted a BBQ for [info]jcwhitaker  and her friends. It was a good time, with a lot of meat (mmm.... meat and carcinogens!) and singing, both choral and bardic. After the bulk of folks left, we sampled absinthe, margaritas, mojitos, and more... probably a bit too much more, but a fitting beginning to the weekend's festivities. I packed hurriedly and then headed to bed since I had to work in the morning.

Friday started with work (ugh). Usually, I don't work on Fridays, but for the summer I have traded some days with my co-worker so she can enjoy long weekends with her hubby. On one hand, this means I had an extra day to come home from Quest this Monday but on the other hand, it meant I went to work with not enough sleep, not enough done and the world's worst packing job in my car. It literally was about as "full" as it was en route to Quest because things were just randomly tossed in. :P Work was work, but soon I escaped, picked up [info]mightyjesse , some booze, and the Jara sunshade and headed north. We got there just in time for our reservation and sat down to enjoy the Fish Fry. Oi. While the fish was as good as ever, the service, which I *thought* had hit an all-time low a couple years ago, was wretched. I made the executive decision that we should raid the salad bar before we knawed off our own arms and that helped at least. Friday night was pretty casual, with some basic prep for the morning, some chattering until late, and of course some tasty drinks until Don G kicked us out of the bar at closing time.

Saturday began a little damp with evidence of a night-time rain and occasional spitting from the sky, but it never got heavy enough to seriously impede the fun. Thanks to [info]arebekah  and others for providing such a lovely lunch - as usual, it was wonderful to come in off the field to something warm and tasty. The Princess' Sleeve Tourney in the afternoon was fun, particularly because of the A&S/service component (but I'm a dork like that). It was loooong, but I think generally well enjoyed. Congrats to Edward, the new Sleeve holder! And congrats to the Jara fencers - many of you fought really quite well and made me proud to see you on the field!

Unfortunately, Saturday dinner was an even bigger debacle than the night before - we were asked to come back 20 minutes after the original reservation and, although we complied, it still was something like an hour and a half or more from when we were seated to when we got our dinners. :/ Again, the salad bar to the rescue... I was tipsy and hungry from whisk(e)y, but I really pitied the fighters... As it was, I was not over-fond of the chicken parmigana (and, yes, I really did order the chicken parmigana this year ;P) - it is significantly different from Sandy's and I think I may need to find a new favorite on the menu. Again, the evening picked up again post-dinner. We had some drinkies, then my "torchlight tourney" with the torches in question being a car's headlamps because the ground was too firm to put in the torches. I had lovely little foam swords for folks to beat one another with and we had a glorious drunken time. Each round of the reverse warlord tourney* featured a round of drinks for the winners, including some fun ice cubes I had been stockpiling the last week or so. (For those of you that asked, the cranberry-concentrate "rubies" were from this mold and the absinthe's skulls and crossbones from this mold. As a side note- if anyone is interested in ordering a set, note that they are *not* dishwasher safe like may other silicone products - my molds met with a well-intentioned but unfortunate accident this weekend...) Utterly silly fun, but a good way to kick off the partying. I stayed up drinking and talking until late, but slid into "observational mode" around midnight and was less social than I often am. Sometimes it is fascinating to just watch social interactions and reflect upon them and I had a good deal to think about...

Sunday, I was a lazy bump and slept in. Unfortunately, this meant I missed [info]mightyjesse 's authorization bout as I thought she was just headed out to practice and didn't know that [info]ego_id_non_feci  would be a big fat bully and push her into authorizing. ;) The rest of the day was casual, with several planned tourneys and an impromptu one that allowed Her Highness to shoot a lot of "revolting peasants." What a fun event! Thanks to [info]ego_id_non_feci (site steward), [info]damej (gate), [info]otesmacke (web master), [info]cass_lee and [info]iarroganti  (tourney sponsors) and all the others who made it possible by working as staff, marshals, or tourney hosts. We finally left site around 6:30 and stopped by to pester [info]sirzig  and get a burger on the way home. I helped [info]mightyjesse  with some WW things and ought to have been working on my own, but I have been lazy and so now need to address that tomorrow.

In all, an excellent weekend, but I'm glad to have a bonus day tomorrow to catch up on responsibilities!

***********************

*Reverse Warlord Tourney - everyone starts as "in" and the pool is divided into two equal teams, which then have a melee against one another. The team with the last gentle(s) standing wins. That team is then resurrected and subdivided into two teams (additional players conscripted from the audience if the sides need evening out) and the scenario repeats until there are only two fighters left, who then go best two out of three for the status of Warlord. The dark and the drunk and the silliness only added to the confusion and general mayhem, resulting in a disorganized but wicked good time.

Quest was a mostly good, mostly, successful adventure this year.

I left Madison Wednesday night, with the plan of stopping in Sioux Falls, spending the day sewing and working on other little projects, and then continuing out to site Thursday night after my companion got out of work... except it didn't work out that way. As I was leaving Madison, I found out that my formulary had bounced and I had until 5:00PM EDT on Monday to fix it. As in, a full day before I was going to get back to the office. >:/ Grrr... crabby Eithni. Even crabbier Eithni when it took almost 8.5 hours instead of the usual 6 to get to SF, thanks to construction and awful rain squalls. So, I arrived quite lat on Wednesday and spent Thursday working on the &*$% formulary instead of playing with toys. Happily, my boss was understanding and is not making me take Thursday as a vacation day and I got at least ONE of my projects finished. The formulary was not yet accepted when I left for site, but I had given enough directions to our Pharmacy Benefits Manager that they were able to fix it while I was incommunicado. For various reasons, including a really impressive game of camping-gear Tetris, we ended up leaving town later than we intended, but the ride out was pleasant enough - talking, sewing, and listening to an audiobook made the miles fly by... Arriving on site at 3AM was less than amusing, but we were reasonably efficient in setting up and soon were abed.

Friday was the Geek Food day - I came to site with a box full of Viking-period ingredients and a vague idea of how to mush them together ad decided I would just play with them and see what I got. Sadly, I was Full of Fail and utterly forgot to take pictures of any of the dishes. *sigh* I just am really bad at taking pictures at events. Anyway, I'll try to recall the "recipes" as best as I am able. I didn't use modern measuring implements, though, so this is all a little vague. A "measure" is about a cup, but that was just an estimate.

Friday brunch )

Friday dinner )

Oh, and FYI - eggs placed on a grate above coals and rotated will become "hard boiled". Eggs placed on a grate and not rotated will become cooked on one side and remain raw on the other (the soot patterns give you a good idea about whether you've turned it evenly). And an egg placed in the coals will explode with an impressive bang and leave apretty solid crater in the firepit. Hee! Too fun!

Friday night was coldcoldcold! I was worried I was just a whiner until A told me that she had seen on her alarm/thermometer that it had reached 20*F. Ooof. I so need a night cap - even with all my warm sheepies and decadent bedthings, I was still chilly... Another project for the list, I suppose... I needed a Pictish hood anyway...

Saturday was the Teach-Teach-Teach day. I got a sort of late start after a tasty-tasty steak lunch and associated cleanup, but then did a quick pass through the merchants and headed to Troll to teach my classes. The first one was a general fiber class wherein I taught whatever people were up for. I started with teaching [info]fibergeek  Eithni's Magic Veil Stitch and then I taught all the attendees (and some fighters that wandered too close) how to whipcord.

Then, I taught an Elizabethan costuming class that was part library road show and part tutorial. That was followed by a short private costuming class and then it was almost time for court. I cleaned up my stuff and some of the A&S and went back to the tent... where I promptly faceplanted until I heard the herald cry for court. Court was quick and fun - and bonus! - one of my favorite blanks evah (the Pict from the Book of Kells) was used. I didn't see it finished, but HrRM told me which it was.

Saturday night was fajitas, s'mores, some wandering, some drinking, and some bardic. I slept in entirely too late on Sunday, but it was nice to wake up WARM, and to the call of free bacon. ;) Packing and getting offsite took about an hour longer than we'd planned, but with no firm plans for the day, there was little stressing about it, other than another game of quality Tetris to get everything back into the car. Hugs and goodbyes all around, and then we were off again...

Here's my plan for Quest:

Friday I will be mucking about with Norse foods. I've bought a bunch of period-appropriate ingredients, I'll be bringing my cooking implements of doom, and you should join me if you way to play or just want to chatter at me while I cook. I'm not sure where we'll be camped, but I'll feed you Norse snackies if you find me.

Saturday will be the teach-y day. I am teaching a string class at 1:30PM and will be doing a library roadshow at 3PM (see descriptions below). I'm planning on bringing a selection of fiber arts toys and my Elizabethan books. If you have anything in particular you would like to see, either fiber-wise or book-wise, let me know and I'll try to bring along appropriate resources for you. Also, let me know if you want a private session of any of my classes and I'll do my best to get you in sometime on Saturday.

See you Friday!

Fiber fun... )

Crown this weekend was a very good time, even with the various misadventures...

I was traveling with [info]gflower  but I had to work on Friday, so we were departing somewhat later than I usually do. Due to the rainy weather, construction and good conversation, we missed the 90/94 split at Tomah. However, it turns out that the weather and construction on 94 were pretty bad, so perhaps that ended up being a fortuitous mistake, after all. I had just enough time to spend about a half an hour in the hot tub to work the cold and the drive out of my joints when my roommate showed up. There was some intention of getting to bed at a decent hour, but instead I stayed up with Astrid and Company, steaming her garb and teaching some sewing stitches to one of the ladies.

Saturday was pretty low key, at least at the beginning - I put my first hand sewing kit in the silent auction, delivered a ton of wool, delivered some linen, distributed the little wooden toys I made, and generally hung out with folks. Of course, as most of you know, [info]sirzig  won the day for his lady-love [info]mightyjesse... I forsee a lot more sewing and sweatshop days in the near future. :) THEN things really picked up - I was retaining and ended up doing some speed-steaming of garb right before court. (Well, some speed-steaming and some stealing of garb off the persons of some of the Dons... They do promise to serve their Kingdom...) Feast was amazing as usual, but I was happy to finally get back to the hot tub at the end of the night. It was a long, busy, cold evening, but nothing the hot tub and some Scotch won't cure. :) The night was rounded out by some partying and singing with folks in one of the meeting rooms.

Sunday started... inauspiciously. It quickly improved, however, when we headed out to SR Harris. [info]gflower  and [info]sirzig  needed to get back to Madison early in the evening, so they headed back and I took [info]mightyjesse  with me. Lunch took awhile to arrive, since we forgot to account for the fact that Perkin's would be packed on Mother's Day. :P (I think I need to avoid that Perkins from now on, anyway... The last two times I've eaten there, I've gotten ill.) Sadly, SR Harris was a bit of a disappointment... not that I didn't spend entirely too much, mind you! Probably, the "best find" is the 8-ounce kitchen green linen. Squee! We made a quick stop at IKEA on the way out of town too - that was entertaining, but I was pretty much done with people by then. It was nice to spend the ride home chattering and plotting with [info]mightyjesse, but I spent most of the ride home with an icepack on my eye (see inauspicious start to the day) and I was quite happy to get home and collapse into bed...

Good weekend, but a tiring one...

I am most pleased to announce the return of the Griffin Needle Challenge!

Griffin Needle Challenge

Hosted by the Barony of Jararvellir

October 16-17, 2009

Rodeway Inn South, Madison, WI
Site website: http://tinyurl/c7c74d
Event website: https://mywebspace.wisc.edu/jshetzel/web/griffinsneedle/index.html

The Griffin Needle Challenge is a costuming competition, open to teams or individuals, where the goal is to create a complete outfit in just 20 hours! Site will open at 6PM on Friday and the competition will begin at 10PM. Needles down will be called at 6PM on Saturday night, with the judging to follow immediately. There are four divisions to accommodate any skill level, all the way from Novice to the Pyxis’ Pleasure (where the goal is to create an outfit and accessories that is as accurate and documentable as possible), so grab some friends and grab some fabric and come sew with us!

The major changes for this year include:

* No need to draft patterns on site – we would rather you produce a quality garment than show how fast you can drape a pattern.

* The site is in a hotel and so completely climate controlled

* The site is in a hotel, so those desiring a “real” bed can reserve a room for the night.

* However, due to site constraints, we will not have a separate communal napping room. Bring an eye mask and earplugs if you plan to nap at your station.

Please see the website for details, rules, and more information as it becomes available!

Since site is smaller this year, space will be limited – please register your team as soon as possible by sending the following information to me:

Team Name:

Team Captain:

Captain’s email address:

Captain’s phone number:

Division: (Novice, Intermediate, Advances or Pyxis’ Pleasure)

Period and culture of entry (optional):

The weather was ideal, the tourneys were small but enjoyable to watch, the company was excellent, court gave me the opportunity to recognize some exceptional individuals, the food was faboo, and General Meeting was reasonably efficient.  Thanks to all involved for a perfectly splendid day!

*sigh* The house is quiet and empty, after a long, busy, stressy weekend.

Friday I did a lot of cleaning and prep work for the event, houseguests, and the Strawberry Party, plus a run out to site to drop off banners, the high seat, and miscellaneous other critical items. (I did not get to quite everything I had wanted to do but since we had lost power on Thursday night I was somewhat behind on my chores to begin with.) I made experimental sourdough bread and sloe cheese as I was waiting for folks, and they turned out acceptable, if not quite what I was looking for, but such is the nature of experimental cooking. All the expected guests got in safely and we even had some folks who were staying at a local hotel drop by for awhile for a Scotch tasting. Once the guests were back at their hotel or abed downstairs, I made a quick run out to the grocery store, showered, and then hit the hay myself around 2AM.

Saturday morning came entirely too early - I started getting "can you bring..." texts and emails about ten minutes before my alarm went off, and that set the tone for the day - things were busy-busy-go-go-go!, but that was probably for the best anyway. I'd planned to get on site by 8AM, figured it would be more like 8:30, but finally got there around 9AM. The first part of the morning was consumed with dropping off requested items then setting up the A&S and getting the entrants settled. I had set up four 8' long tables, thinking that would be one more than necessary, but by the end of the afternoon, all the available space and some of the windowsills were full! Somewhere I have a complete count of all the entrants, but we easily had thirty very high quality entries, so I was mightily pleased. When HrRM's champion was not on site right before court, for a brief, shining moment, it looked like I might be able to carry the axe into court, but then he showed up at the last moment and the axe was wrested from me again. (*pout*) Ah well, Coronations involve enough up-and-down for me anyway - between being called for the end-of-reign thanks, the creation of a new Pyxis, and the oaths, I spent a lot of time pacing the aisle. :P [info]goldfrog  and R's last court was simple, but touching - I'll miss having them on the throne, even though I'm sure S&A will do a fine job themselves.

After court, I checked in with A&S again, got only a few moments to chat with friends from near and far, then went to investigate lunch. I was hoping to fight and so decided to pass on the Scotch egg and instead settled for a granola bar for lunch before hitting the rapier field. The Queen Mum's tourney was a lot of fun, but I am still woefully out of practice and so slooooow and messy. :/ However, I brought out the pretty buckler for the first time in about two years, so there were a lot of folks who had not seen it before and I got a lot of compliments on it. I got to play with Duke T, [info]fencert , and some other fun fights before having to bow out of the tourney to attend the WW meeting. The meeting went well, with nothing earthshattering, but some good groundwork laid. Then I had about 20 minutes free wherein I went to go check on [info]dread_ex  and was hoping to see [info]cass_lee 's pelican-y business, but I had to go attend TRMs at the A&S before the principles were able to be collected. As part of the A&S display, I had all the entrants who were able attend their work at 4PM for the opportunity to discuss it directly with TRMs. I think it went over well and gave TRM the chance to meet some of the artisans and learn a bit more about their arts. After TRMs departed, I met with a small panel of peers to choose the Peer's Prize winner and counted all the beans to determine the Populace Prize winner. Right quick, it was time for court prep and evening court. There were some very pleasing bits of business on the docket, but many of them are confidential for now, so I'll keep them to myself. I can report that the winner of the Populace Prize was S for his wire weave, the winner of the Peer's Prize was [info]rezansky  for his handsewn and embroidered tunic, and the winner of the Royal Prize was G for his multi-item entry. It was a near thing in almost all of the categories, though, since there were so many really excellent entries - both TRMs and the Peers had to discuss at some length before making a decision and the choice was in part dictated by HrRM's wish that each category have a different winner.

Following evening court, [info]valkyr8 and I discussed new bags for the Jara High seats as the ones that I made simply are not working. I got the car partially packed and then headed down for feast. Wow! Feast was one to remember and [info]arebekah  really outdid herself! In addition to the truly tasty set menu, over a dozen guest cooks presented a dish to the head table and one of the lower tables to be judged on taste and presentation. The lovely and talented [info]relativelylucid's pudding won for taste (yum! and I usually don't like that sort of thing) and the E&A team won for presentation. I do have to say that [info]tcsumner had a really marvellous hyppocras, though - I'm afraid that coming so late in the feast, it may have suffered from sensory overload. :P I packed up with all haste and headed home, where the Strawberry Party was already in full swing. I quickly put to rights the few things that still needed to be set up or corrected (the original plan for set-up crew had been foiled by car trouble but things had gotten more-or-less rolling anyway) and then started pouring the frilly drinks. [info]cass_lee  and one of the party guests kindly went out for more ice and strawberries when it became obvious how much had already been eaten by the time I got in. However, they returned quickly and the sweet freezy drinks flowed freely. Usually, I outlast my guests' energy, but between being sore from fighting, the giant dinner, and otherwise it having been a very taxing day, I shooed out the last of the guests around 2:30 when I simply could not stay awake any longer.

I was out so completely, I never even heard [info]katrionans  and her brood leave, nor did I hear [info]iarroganti  moving about and once again being so helpful with the party clean up, nor did I hear [info]corvusjoyous  come in and drop off my oven, roaster and other assorted things lent to the feast. :P Thanks for your assistance, folks, and I'm sorry I was a bad hostess - I finally came to sometime around noon and then with barely enough time to have lunch with the last of the guests and see him out the door.

The rest of today contiinues to be busy - more clean up, dinner to celebrate a friend's 50th birthday, then General Meeting. Ooof. Off I go!

Well, in sum it was a good weekend, if not entirely according to plan.

Thursday, I stayed home from work because I was planning on going to Ides of March, an eight hour drive from Madison, and I was miserably stuffed up from a cold again. (I swear, I don't know what has been up this winter - I have been more consistently ill with stoopid viruses than ever before in my life...) regular applications of zinc, Vitamin C, and the neti pot worked wonders, however. Friday I spent in Sioux Falls working on my project for the A&S Throwdown at Ides and then going out to a local bar where some friends and friends of friends were playing. It made for a late, but enjoyable night.

Saturday, we hit the road at a reasonable hour and headed out to the site. Since there had been no schedule available, I had been concerned that I was going to miss the Throwdown. (I was mocked for my anal-retentive need for a schedule, but I am used to having things happen at a set time, dammit, and I'd put a lot of time into my entry, so I was a little anxious. :P) As it turns out, the mocker was correct - it had not started by the time we got there. Sadly, I soon also found out that it was not going to happen at all, since the instigators were all trapped in Fargo by the flooding. Sadness. Completely understandable, but still sad. I hope they decide to hold it at another future event and I hope it will be one I can attend... With no down-n-dirty A&S fun to be had, I spent the day working on some sewing projects and kibitzing with the other string-folks. There had been some rapier (two fighters) in the morning, but we arrived too late and I had not grabbed my gear out of the car anyway. Heavy weapons had four or five combatants and I think at least one authorization. We did run an A&S bean count, so there was at least some A&S goodness, which made me feel somewhat better. A mid-afternoon ice cream run was a highlight of the afternoon though - I have no idea how long it has been since I've had a Blizzard. Nummy. Feast was also nummy and the ice cream didn't even ruin my supper. :) We stopped by the "postrevel" at the local hotel, but the hot tub was FULL of soap suds but barely lukewarm. Plus, the hot tub was populated by some working men who were feeding beers to clearly underage kids, so I went to go hang out in the hotel room with [info]missdoom  and S - we were shortly joined by most of the other SCA folks who were also creeped out by the underagers. We got back to SooFoo quite late, but I managed to stay awake all the way home after being drawn (baited?) into an involved peerage/politics discussion. A good day, if not quite what I'd planned.

Sunday was quieter - sleeping in, brunch, lazing about, bottling some mead, out for a very nice dinner, a movie, and bed at a reasonable hour. Monday morning I got up, took my leave from my host, collected [info]zarhooie  for a nice brunch at the Cracker Barrel, and then drove home. Other than the high winds (oi! my aching shoulder! I'd already slept on it wrong the night before!) and the adventure with the Pit of Undercarriage Despair (see previous post), the drive was uneventful. I'm actually coming to like the long road trips, in a way. I like listening to NPR and, in the few places where I can't get NPR in clearly, I'm remembering that there ARE some flavors of country music I don't hate. (gasp!) I still detest the old whiney stuff and the new I-wanna-be-a-pop-star-in-cowboy-boots stuff, but there is some pretty good stuff out there now and again and in the vast expanses of southern Minnesota, usually one of the 16 country stations you can get at any point is playing something acceptable. But then, I'm often a complete sucker for a story, a melody, and a guitar. Double points if there's a fiddle. Dinner tonight was oh-so-exciting leftovers of a dinner I made. On one hand, I know I get spoiled on my weekends away, but on the other, any day when I get cheesy hashbrowns TWICE, I really can't complain.

'Night all.

...I used a machine to topstitch a garment. *dies* I am justifying it to myself that it is on a heavy armor doublet where handstitching may not be sturdy enough and likely would not be nearly well enough appreciated. :P Still... it burns, my precious! The visible stitching, it hurts us...

This is stoopid hour to be awake sewing and packing for a War I'm not going to... although it is amusing to play midnight Dial-a-Laurel Sewing Crisis Helpline. ;)  At least I know I am not alone in this madness...

Anyway. Tired. Bed now. Pictures tomorrow. Those of you getting GW deliveries, feel loved and all that. Nuh-night.

15 February 2009 @ 07:00 pm
Well, I have had more successful weekends.

Despite staying home from work on Thursday and my usual Friday off, I was still a bit sick from this week's cold when the weekend's guests showed up. I did my best to decontaminate the house - washing all the linens, cleaning and Lysol-ing everything, and even opening the house up for a bit since the day was warm. Sadly, my virally-infected self was not the sickest person in the house - the boys stopped at a Chinese restaurant on the way in and apparently some of the sushi or something was off. They all felt a little off, but poor S was too sick to eat dinner and had a truly miserable night.

Saturday started out poorly, too. I was running on minimal sleep and somewhere between getting into the car and getting on the highway I decided we were going to the Flesh Wound site - the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, not the Fond du Lac County Fairgrounds... *sigh* I luckily realized the mistake before too long, but my attempt to correct by heading North on a county road was a little special since there had been snow the night before and the plow had not yet been through. Ugh. Happily, we still made it to site with time to set up and dress before morning Court. The day passed pleasantly, if in a tired and headache-y blur. At 3PM I scooted off site, checked into the hotel, and had a blissful two hour nap before returning to site. Someone even remarked upon our return that I looked so much better pink than pale green, even if it showed off my cold-reddened nose to better advantage. :P Evening court was fun, particularly my "presentation" for Grimmy. Feast was yummy and the company good, but it was splendid beyond measure to get into the hot tub at the hotel. Unfortunately, the chlorine eventually triggered a migraine. I took my meds and laid down for a bit, but even so I was only able to be social for a little while before the noise sent me to bed for the night.

Sunday we checked out of the hotel and drove back to Madison for lunch, since H had forgotten his phone in my basement and the boys could not just go back home directly from Fond du Lac. (Considering his adventures coming home from Fighter's school last year, H was not entirely disappointed by this. :P) There was a slight detour on the way home, too, since I somehow didn't take the correct split when 151 left 41, but we jogged over on 49, which is one of my favorite county roads, going past a windmill farm and Horicon Marsh, so it was a pretty ride at least. We had a nice lunch at Red Robin (except for M, who got a hair in his burger... and a free lunch) and then the boys hit the road. I had a little nap and a bit o' dinner, but still feel a little run down so it will be an early night for me, I think.

I always try my utmost to make it to Nordskogen's Twelfth Night and this year that was really the only one I had planned on attending... Somehow, however, I have ended up attending three Twelfth Nights in three different Kingdoms - Calontir (Omaha), Northshield (Nordskogen) and Midrealm (Tree-Girt-Sea)!

Good, if very different times were had at all of them - Calontir's being the fightiest, Northshield's being the most award-related exciting, and Midrealm's was the most relaxing. In fact, other than the drive there and back, I was pretty quality useless all day long. I didn't go to the Laurel meeting, I didn't wear the coronet, I didn't go to court... I did take a lovely little nap, though. :)  I chatted and sewed, drank and embroidered (we'll see if any of the stitching needs to be picked out tomorrow). It was good to see folks, if some more briefly than planned...

However, my weekend is far from done - it's to bed with me and Yule Moot in the morning!
