Curb Shopping Spree
So... Thursday night is August 14th, otherwise known as Madison's Great Night of Homelessness - most of the student leases expire on noon August 14 and the new ones do not begin until noon on August 15. A huge proportion of downtown moves that day and many people take that opportunity to jettison some of their belongings, leading to some really spectacular curb shopping. For years I have thought it would be fun to hit downtown with a pack of people and wander around looking for... well, stuff. I've seen everything from clothing to furniture to books (including my 1912 complete Encyclopedia Britannica) to sewing machines to pianos. You just never know...

I am thinking about meeting after most people will be done with work and dinner (say 7ish?) and prowling downtown until we get cold or bored, potentially retiring back to the Home for Wayward Girls to sort our booty and indulge in some tasty treat. If you would like to join me, comment and we'll hash out details.

Hippy Christmas already?

Yup! Wanna come? It has to be as educational as Adams County, if less risk of cannibalism...

Awesome. I was going to make dinner for myself and Sile. If you want Hawaiian turkey burgers, I'll make some for you too.

That sounds really fun. But choir...but...once/year! I'll have to see...meeting at your place or meeting downtown?
eithni: peekabooeithni on August 13th, 2008 05:48 am (UTC)
Probably a mix - I'll be departing from my house with some folks and prolly meeting up with others in the East Johnson area.

ahh, the memories
I'd love to go, if I lived anywhere nearby. Bummer. The year I moved into the house on E. Johnson we found a bunch of depression glass that my mom took home. Her comment was that some parent will likely be upset when it doesn't make it home.

Hope you find many wonderful treasures.

Re: ahh, the memories
There are occasionally really amazing finds... It will a lot of fun, regardless of what we find. It's all about the hunt and hanging out. Wish you COULD be here!

You need a van or a pickup truck on call to follow you and pick up and transport the better finds. :)

Done! And I'm bringing my cart! :)

You could do a spoof of the Snickers commercials by going in costumes. Instead of 'Feast!' the mantra could be 'Scrounge!'.

Oh I like this idea! LOL

That sounds fun. Not that I need more stuff in my house, but it's always fun to look. Should I try to swap cars tomorrow so our Caravan is available, just in case?

Count me in! The kami know I could use a lot of stuff right now on a non-existent budget. I'll see about ganking Jack's stationwagon for hauling stuff.

My SIL was moving downtown yesterday and someone tried to walk off with her grill because he thought she had left it on the curb! He started swearing at her when he realized that it wasn't up for grabs! Lol.

Just saying. We miss you!

I'm down for it! I have to work until 9pm, though... maybe by that time you'll be closer to down town, anyway? I'll give you a call. I'll make sure to clear out my car, too for transport if neces. - even if only for a group of peoples.
