House work
I've had a reasonably good night - a blend of relaxing and productive. I have a great deal left to do, however, especially because I have some hostas and irises that need to get in the ground tomorrow.

But first, off to snuggle in bed with a sexy man! Ah, Thoreau!

(Why are so many of the nice, thoughtful men dead?)

Because despite the huge number of people alive today, there are still more of them who are dead than there are still living?

Damn statistics...
jtdiii: Over laptopjtdiii on September 19th, 2008 11:29 am (UTC)
It could just be a matter of perception...

The dead ones are less likely to talk back after all. :)

Oooh! another virtue - quiet! ;)

... sadly, I actually enjoy a good argument, so the joy of that may wear off pretty quickly.

That dead one was a bit of a looney though... :)
eithni: greeneithni on September 19th, 2008 04:23 pm (UTC)
But looney in a flavor I like. He's a little too granola-head crunchy sometimes, but his heart is in the right place.

Obviously, my dear, they were either too nice, too thoughtful, or an overwhelmingly fatal combination of both, *nai*?
iasmin de cordobaiasmin on September 19th, 2008 01:13 pm (UTC)
Not all of them are dead, but the one I have is mine mine mine! :)
eithni: snapeeithni on September 19th, 2008 04:24 pm (UTC)
I didn't say all... just so many. The pickings left are slim, and many of those already snapped up. ;P

As noted, it's simply a matter of statistics...since the vast majority of the human race is dead, the vast majority of the nice guys in that population are also dead.

Unless of course you want to posit that the proportion of nice, thoughtful guys is rising over time; even if that were (is) true, I don't think it's nearly enough to compensate...

That said, clearly the rate of geeky guys (and geekdom in general) is rising quite dramatically, wouldn't you say?

*cheesy grin*

eithni: snapeeithni on September 19th, 2008 04:25 pm (UTC)
Damn statistics...

Yup, I think geekiness is on the rise, but it's not the only desirable trait.
mightyjessemightyjesse on September 19th, 2008 01:56 pm (UTC)
Heck, I had trouble finding a boy who was *employed* much less one that was employed AND thoughtful. I keep thinking that it would be easier to filter through candidates if we'd just let Darwin do the work... Then we could just concentrate on sorting through the fellows wot didn't starve to death....
eithni: meaneithni on September 19th, 2008 04:26 pm (UTC)

That might work if we first weed out the violent homicidal ones. Otherwise they'd just kill off the nice ones.

Reminds me of the time I arrived home unexpectedly to find Sonia lying naked in the bathtub with Jane Austen.
eithni: morganeithni on September 19th, 2008 04:26 pm (UTC)
I've had bedroom trysts with Austen too... Lovely woman. I', flexible. ;)

Reproductive strategy - Because the tough, meaner ones killed them all off?
eithni: snapeeithni on September 19th, 2008 04:27 pm (UTC)
Perhaps. I'm leaning to rare genetic type, too. ;)

I think that we are more optimistic with the dead. Generally, only the real broad outline of a person survives after they have been dead for a long time. You only hear about his our her great strengths, or weaknesses. The small details get swept up over time. For example, with Thoreau, we know his works. We don't know how bad he smelled, or if he picked his nose.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that a historical figure is generally going to look a lot better (or a lot worse) than someone you encounter on the street. It's hard to get past the warts and all.

Heh. You're right... it was just supposed to be a silly flippant comment about my bedpartner, but a lot of people took it seriously. I am demonstrably fond of seriously flawed, live men... it's just that the dead ones are more likely to whisper profound little somethings into my sleepy ear at night. :P
quaintessimal: woadquaintessimal on September 19th, 2008 07:53 pm (UTC)
They're not dead, but

a) they're so nice they don't seek or attract attention like the vain or needy,
b) they're so thoughtful that, well, see a)

One thing I've noticed, esp. in the SCA, the nice ones are more suckers/victims of the need to 'rescue' helpless ladies from whatever it is they need to be rescued from. God knows how many nice people I've seen put through the wringer by what I think of as 'professional victims' - they get used until something brighter/shinier/richer comes by, and then they're cast aside. The ones that are worth helping are those that don't constantly cry out for rescue, but do appreciate kindness and reciprocate generously.

It's a damn shame.
