Ok... For the Files of Weird. I have seen some really, really weird shit in my life, but this evening's activities rank pretty high.

I went to Border Downs a few weeks ago and took along some of my critical books. This afternoon, I unpacked them and noticed that the first volume of the Early Christian Monuments of Scotland was missing. The ECMS is the "Bible" of Pictish studies, so I am generally very careful to make sure it is packed up when I finish a road show. It is an expensive, rare, substantial book and critical to my studies. Obviously, I was a little paniced. I called zarhooie  and she oblidged me by looking through the room where we had held the class and calling some of the local folks who had been at the moot. I looked through the empty boxes, looked through my bookshelves, looked through the piles of books I have here, there, and everywhere. I looked everywhere it could be three times... and then I had to go to the Newcomers' Moot.

When dread_ex and I got back, I looked on the shelves and in the boxes again and still found nothing. Giving up on staring at the bottoms of the boxes, I decided I would use them to use organize in the basement. I put two boxes one on top of the other, and then headed for the basement. A few steps into the kitchen, there was an audible and tangible thump from inside the boxes and they were suddenly heavy. Startled, I looked into the bottom box - and there it was!

The whole thing sounds insane, but dread_ex  was right there, saw the empty boxes, heard the thump, can vouche for the weird. The whole thing is crazy and impossible... There really are only two possibilities - Border Downs has wormhole technology they are not sharing with the rest of the Kingdom or the Good Neighbors found it for me and thought it would be funny to give it back in a dramatic manner. I need to beat the truth out of zarhooie  the next time I see her, but tonight, just in case, I've left out some milk, honey, and a wee bit of Scotch, just in case.

Best book is back,

the Prodigal returns--and there was

Indeed, great rejoicing!

I could get a new copy, but it would be expensive and a hassle.... this is unsettling, but happy.

The standard phrase offered in hopes of the return when something that important goes missing is "no questions asked". Sounds to me like a good time for this phrase to be applied. ;-)

Just be thankful that they gave it back. See? No beating of the zarhooie required. :)

Dunno... The wormhole theory has NOT been entirely ruled out. The book is reasonably large - what is the biggest thing you guys can fit through the wormhole?

Cool! Glad the book found its way back home. :)

So, in this great and wonderful tome, is there anything dealing with my area of focus?

Arghh! Didn't realize I wasn't logged in on my previous post!

Eeeek! How have you managed not to learn about the ECMS!?!?!

The ECMS is essentially the Bible of Pictish studies and the source of all goodness! There is little if anything on textiles (I think the comment on the carvings of looms) but it does have a lot about the symbols and the "grammar" of the stones.

ILL it. NOW. Buy it, if and when you get the chance.

I've found there is a lot to be said for asking politely.

Indeed. :)

Shines a new light on the lengthy disappearance (and sudden reappearance) of your red corset, though. Clearly, your house was built over some sort of dimensional gateway. Doubtless that is why the previous owner (who was not capable of accepting anything outside her narrow world view) was so crazy and felt the need to let her grandchildren paint that hideous cross on the door to the garage.

It was weird. In the light of day I believe that Border Downs has developed telport technology and is refusing to share with the rest of the Kingdom.

you got your book back, I got the MISSING SOCKS OF DOOM back. They must be in a friendly mood... time to set out some milk, bread, honey and mead by the front door.

Heh. Life, it is the odd.

Indeed, life is the odd. :P

I figured any fae living in my house would have to be Scotch drinkers, so we went with milk. honey and Scotch. :)

Dude! That's awesome. Good idea on the Scotch, too!

Wow. I had the same sort of thing with an earring once, but it took 6 years of it to show up again.
eithni: WTFeithni on November 16th, 2008 11:39 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I once had a necklace show up, on my freshly made bed, in the middle of my pillow. None of the roommates would own finding it and putting it there and it sure as hell was not there when I made the bed...

This was so odd because 1) it is a large item and 2) there was a witness. :P Creepy.
ego_id_non_feciego_id_non_feci on November 17th, 2008 12:22 am (UTC)
Creepy, but cool. Can I touch your hand?!

You might want to make sure to have some payment on hand, though, just in case they decide to be out of humor. The last thing you need is for them to think they're owed something!
eithni: morganeithni on November 17th, 2008 01:12 am (UTC)
Paid 'em milk, honey, and Scotch again...

My personal opinion is that the poltergeists have lived with you so long that they have the research geek bug now, too
