I'm dyeing over here...
It is definitely getting to be spring, and that can only mean one thing... it's dyeing time!

I have some commissions I really need to get off my plate, but after that, I have a few experiments that I would like to run, not the least of which is with woad. I will be ordering some woad from abroad in the next few days. If you would like some, please let me know and I will add your order to mine to save on the shipping. I'm going to get some woad balls (semi-processed woad leaves) from one company - they seem to be about $8 for about 100 grams. I am also going to order some woad powder (more completely processed) from another provider at $15 for 25 grams (they also have 10 gram packs for $8). I also may be ordering some weld (500grams for about $15) and madder extract ($9 for 25 grams). I'm not sure what the shipping will be, but I suspect it won't be too bad - it's coming from overseas, but they should be small packages.

If anyone is interested, please let me know by noon on Wednesday so I can place the order.

Oh! And for those of you wishing you had Jenny Dean's Wild Color, this is not an adequate substitute, but it is a lot of fun to see what she's up to these days and she does seem to give new recipes pretty regularly!   http://www.jennydean.co.uk/wordpress/

Any chance of woad or weld seeds??? I'm not yet to the point of doing my own natural dyeing, but someday!!!I need to add this to my research application... *squeeee*

Yes, they have woad seeds. No, I won't order them for you because it is classified as a noxious/invasive weed and you can get in trouble for planting it. :P

I do have a request in to the Forestry Service to find out when their next woad eradication program is. They go out and pull hundreds of the plants. I figure I can sit next to the pile and boil the bastards to my heart's content without the hassle/potential legal yuck of growing them.

Weld seeds should be ordered fresh when you are ready to plant. You can get them from Richer's seeds. :)

I am interested but I don't know how much I need or what to do with it. Woad dyes blue? and madder red?

Yup. Woad is tricky and I've never used it before. I've used madder root, but not the extract before, so that's an experiment too. So, um, yeah. If you want to try dyeing just a small item, get the smaller package size. The weld is the only one that comes in a pretty big package. I'll probably have a dye day here at the Home for Wayward Girls sometime this spring.

I would like $15 of the woad powder and one of the madder extracts as well please.

Thank you!

I want some, but I would like to know how many grams of dye are recommended for how many grams of wool... Does your source have a recommendation?

The dye supplier does not, but my favorite book, Wild Color, should. We can look at it tomorrow.
