so, tell me about "bardic madness", what happens there, what sort of event is it? Why would someone want to attend that event instead of some other event in some other Kingdom?

(she said, idly speculating on the vague possibility of some travel in the US between finishing her thesis and heading to Europe...)

Bardic Madness is a splendid event! So wonderful, it has even spawned copycat events in at least two other kingdoms. :)

Simply put, Bardoc Madness is a day of bardic challenges and classes in a "bardic safe space" where all are welcome to perform, whether or not you are a polished performer. It's a lot of fun and is usually capped off with a really good Bardic circle. It's sort of in the middle of nowhere this year, but I'm sure we can find you a ride from Milwaukee, Madison, the Twin Cities, or several other major Midwestern towns.

Besides, I'll be there. ;)

Ok, I'll admit it, the fact that you are there is a draw, since I've been wanting to meet you in person. I'm also a bardic junkie (but from the Oerthan tradition of a room full of people all singing the same song, as opposed to "performance" art).

Oddly enough, I've been learning to play the Hammer Dulcimer, and the international Hammer Dulcimer list has has advertised an (a href="http://www.dulcimerdays.com/">event</a> which, alas, conflicts with this one (and, no doubt, if I go looking, there are many, many other things which would be fun that do as well. Oh well, it is still too soon to say if I'll be able to do a travel adventure in June...
eithnieithni on April 19th, 2009 01:01 pm (UTC)

Well, I can assure you that Northshield is a very friendly place. There will be a fair amount of solo performance, especially during the day, but there will be some great mass sings too...

Why limit yourself to a weekend of Hammered Dulcimer, when you can have Hammered Dulucimer and so much more?!?!? ;) If you can pull off coming, there's even a chance I could find a HD for you to borrow for the weekend.

just seeking information, for now...
So, nothing is in the actual planning stages yet—I can’t even apply for my visa till I get more paperwork from the Uni in Italy, and I don’t yet know when/if I’ll be able to travel between finishing up here and heading there. But… If I were to blow off West Crown in favour of Bardic Madness, would you, or someone you know, be able to fetch me from an airport, get me to the event, see that I had someplace to sleep and access to food, and then deposit me at an airport again afterwards? If so, which airport would be convenient? What day/time of day would be most convenient for an arrival time? For a departure?

Oh, we will be SO much more interesting than sweaty fighters! I need to dash now, I'll respond further later.

Re: just seeking information, for now...
OK... So, if you are just going to come for the event, the most convenient would be if you can fly into/out of Sioux Falls, since that is the host city, but that is likely to be expensive. I can reasonably reliably make sure you get a ride from Madison, Milwaukee, or Minneapolis, if you fly in by midafternoon on Friday, June 19 and fly out no earlier than early evening on Sunday June 21. Options exist to get you there from Chicago too, but that would probably require extra time for a bus to and from Madison (about 3 hours).

If you are planning on coming and hanging out in the Midwest for awhile, the schedule can be more loose. I personally will be traveling to Sioux Falls June 18-21 or 22, since I am sort of seeing a fellow out there. :P

If your travel dates are more flexible, the really big and fun event in the summer around here is Warriors and Warlords - WW - July 9-12. It is just outside Madison and a full four days of camping, classes, bardic fun, and more. Just to give you options. ;)

In any event, if you show up in Northshield, I can make sure we take good care of you, I just need to know when and where you'll be coming in/leaving from!

Re: just seeking information, for now...
Ok, if I do that part of the trip, I'm thinking of flying straight to Sioux Falls from Colorado (if I did that, should I fly in Friday evening, or bright and early Saturday morning? I see that the event itself is just the one day, and my friends in Colorado might have more time to visit on Friday after work).

After the event it would be great if I could get a ride from there to Wisconsin with you (or someone else). Road trips are a fablous time for getting to know people, and good for making progress on hand-sewing projects (the list of projects I want to start as soon as my thesis is done is longer than there will be room in my luggage).

I've got family in Racine and Milwaukee, and very good friends in Whitewater, so getting me close enough to go visit them would be good.

Re: just seeking information, for now...
Friday night or very early Saturday are best for arrival - the event is pretty fast-paced with challenges and such. Sioux Falls is smallish, so it won't take long to fetch you, but it will be easier to do so earlier in the day.

We could drive back to Madison Sunday night or Monday AM. I have Monday off, so I could show you Madison and/or drive you to the next leg of your trip (Whitewater or Milwaukee). There is also the option of a mice commuter bus that runs from Madison to Milwaukee and another that runs from Madison to Chicago, so either of those are viable departure points.

*grins devilishly*

Hi, I'm the Provost of Bardic Madness in Northshield, otherwise known as The Original Bardic Madness! (Midrealm Bardic Madness is in the fall. It's also a good event. But we're the ORIGINAL.)

Bardic Madness is an event themed around the bardic performing arts: music, poetry, singing, foolery, even dancing and illumination manage to get in. There are 10-12 challenges throughout the day; people sign up that day to participate in one or more. Challenges are not competitions--the goal is participation and stretching of one's performance skills. There are also classes in bardic or bardic-related arts, as well as a feast and a bardic post-revel afterwards. Northshield's King and Queen plan to be there this year, yay!

For examples of challenges, see last years' challenges at:
http://www.gflower.org/bmxviiichallenges.htm . This year the theme is letters! I foresee many "this challenge brought to you by the letters Θ and ℵ" jokes.

I'll be posting the challenges soon; I actually had them ready and handed them out at a Bardic Day a week ago, but haven't put them out online yet. They'll be on the Northshield Hall and the Northshield Bardic College lists. I'd be happy to copy you when I send it out if you like, just say the word.

More info about this year's Bardic Madness (IX!) is at:
http://www.northshield.org/Events/EventAd.aspx?ID=536. I can field questions, or for local info, I can pass them on to the site autocrat, Gaia Aurelia.

December 5th is also a good date for one of two reasons depending on which you prefer :)

You are a busy lady though. I think that schedule would make me explode!

If you don't have anyone to accompany you to Silks, Needles and More... I'd be very interested.

We already have three, but if we all pack reasonably, a fourth should be ok. Let me check with the others, but tentatively yes. We can't leave until late on Friday, though, so it will be an ironman drive out. :P
Saralostvirtue on April 19th, 2009 06:52 pm (UTC)
I'd be down if they are. Just let me know... I'm up for an ironman, have insurance and a license if driving help is needed. (I'm not sure what vehicle you were planning on taking, but I also have my Honda CRV has a fair amount of luggage space if people are concerned)
eithni: jumpingeithni on April 19th, 2009 06:57 pm (UTC)
excellent. I think we were planning on taking my Fit. It seats four comfortably and has a decent amount of storage - it's not like we have four manly fighters. ;)

Great, just let me know what the others say when you get a chance.

Hey, Eithni, did I dream that I asked you if you had room for me for Silks, Needles & More? It was in a comment at some point...of course I can't find it now. But I didn't get a response from you.

I wonder if we could redistribute your riders, and caravan with your car and mine? Or if anyone among your riders would want to leave earlier (~3pm) and would ride with me? Not that I aim to steal your riders, but it's a long way to drive alone...and I would happily ride long distances with any of your riders. (Not true of the general public.)

Let me know what you think...I don't quite have my heart set on going, as in, I won't drive alone, but it'd be fun to be there.
eithni: jumpingeithni on April 20th, 2009 09:38 pm (UTC)
Doh. I vaguely recall something like that too. I could leave by three-ish too, but let's try this as a plan - we are still two months out. Let's plan on all going together, one way or another, but worry about the details as the date grows nearer. I'm betting (not hoping, but suspecting) we will lose someone along the way. :P
Eliane/Jennifer: moon campinggflower on April 21st, 2009 03:27 pm (UTC)
Sounds like a plan! YAY! Thank you.

And when you add in your weeknight commitments, you make us mere mortals shake our heads and tell each other, "someone needs to find her off switch, or one of these days, she's going to take over the world."

By August things should be back to normal in my life- no longer split between two cities, etc. Let me know what help you want/need, and I'll be there. I know you have a big support crew, but honest, I don't know how you do it!
eithni: greeneithni on April 19th, 2009 06:42 pm (UTC)
Thanks, but the only things I'll really need assistance with are the events - SUN and Golden Seamstress and you're already autocratting ARRG. :p

Hey, FYI - I think some CAM folks are thinking of 10/17 for the next NS heraldic/scribal.

We may just have to conflict, since problems have come up with the proposed August date (even though I like that one better).
