Miniature Princess
I'd been having the itch to paint for a little bit and I got the excuse to do so this week. mightyjesse  wanted a prize for her Sleeve Holder and I had these lovely lockets that I acquired a few years ago and had been stockpiling against future need, but this seemed a perfect application for them. There was one for the Sleeve Holder and a spare in case some other gentle that inspired her.

First, I cut an appropriately sized piece of Bristol board and jammed it into the locket. Usually, a portrait would be put into the locket after painting, but I was afraid the guache would crack if I fiddled with it too much. Then I penciled in a vague outline as a guide. (I forgot to check the dimensions of the locket, but the miniature is about 1.5 inches by 0.75 inches. Bristol board base, guache paine, mostly 10/0 and 0000 brushes.)

Then I blocked in the color

Then added the details:

I'm not super thrilled with how they turned out, but considering I had Thursday evening, while I was hosting the BBQ, to do them, they were OK. mightyjesse completed the lockets with a lock of her own hair, solving the mystery of one of her Super Seekrit Projekts and the reason her bangs are wonky.

I should work on my backlog of things I want to paint while I have the bug, I suppose... Right after I finish that weaving I warped up, and the sewing I need to do and the cleaning my basement needs, and the 1,001 other projects in the queue. :P

Where do you get 0000 size brushes? My best is a set of a 20/0 and a 40/0 that's hiding somewhere...

I don't recall. Whenever I'm at a painting shop, I always inspect their bitty brushes just on general principle. If I find a tiny-tiny one, I buy it. Do you want me to keep my eye out for a 0000 for you?

If you wouldn't mind. I need to do a face up on my model dolls so they don't look so creepy and my smallest brush is way too large. :)

Also, do you know where they carry Dr. Martin's white?

Yes, I'll look for you. When you're home you can borrow mine.

Sorry, no idea on the white. Have you tried Artist and Supply off State Street?

I tried the store on state street, I'll have to talk to the C&I people since they suggested it.

Thank you! :) Now I have to go do work related things.

I have found 4/0 at Michael's, Dick Blick, and the few dedicated artist's supply stores that I peruse, or you could probably order them online.

www.dickblick.com also carries Dr. Martin's, and I think I found mine there (although apparently there aren't any brick & mortar stores in WI at *all*, drat it all).

Thank you! I've been pulling my hair out trying to find it for the commission I'm working on. I KNOW it exists, but no one had any idea!

Edit: Apparently I can't spell. **headdesk**

I am a great believer in mail-order C&I supplies, because then I cannot pet them and thus am not seduced into buying more than I need just because they call to me. I have the same problem with office supplies, which is why I have fourteen different pads of post-it notes at my desk here at work. :-)

Randomly, the "The French School" brand of "gouache" must have acrylic in it or something, because once it dries it does not re-wet. OTOH, this is FANTASTIC if you want to do lots of whitework, because it won't bleed no matter what you do.

Those were coolest EVER. I think the winners were pretty pleased with their prizes! (I think I'll keep the extra "hair rounds" in my crown box in case my Sleeve Holder loses his creepy souvenir...)

Looking good! And, it seems Jesse is happy, too.
