Bother and Damn
The Plan:
Friday - Round-up the plants in the front of the house that I want to get rid of
Weekend - Out of town while the plants die
Monday - pull the corpses and roto-till the front

Monday - the little bastards are not even wilted.  >:/  I guess I'll go out and hit them again, more thoroughly this time.

EDIT (4:28): Mosquitos are blood-sucking hellspawn. I need a bat house for the back yard.

You can't just... get rid of them? They have to die first?

I want to put grass there instead. They are particularly pernicious "ornamentals" that already were trying to take over the lawn. So, yes, they need to die first.

Ok, I'm confused. Can't you just pull them out and then they'll have no choice but to die, and won't hold back your planned schedule?

Perhaps "pernicious" implies "will grow back from the slightest root fragments remaining in the soil."

Precisely. I want them deaddeaddead otherwise I will be pulling them out of the lawn forever.

mtgordon has the right of it - if I don't kill them first, they'll just keep coming up in the grass.

I read your post 'Round-up the plants" to mean gather them in ne location, and was going to suggest using Roundup herbicide. Then re-read it and thought :Duh.:
Those systemic herbicides (Roundup, Weed-Be-Ded, etc) take aabout 5 days to do their thing.

Ah. :/ I was thinking that at 4 days I should at least see some wilting. I re-sprayed them tonight for good measure.

How soon you see the effects of herbicides like Roundup depend in part on weather conditions. Prolonged hot and dry means faster wilty, curly, yellowy plants--sometimes in hours. Cooler and moister conditions--it could be over a week before any noticeable changes.
