See! Now I have clinical proof that linen is good for you!

From the people at fabrics-store.com:

Doctors Zimniewska and Kozlowski explain this in the following excerpt from their clinical study entitled, Influence of Fabrics Construction, Lignin Content and other Factors on UV Blocking:

"...there is a need for efficient protection against harmful UV radiation. And this should be an aim of the textile designer's activities to produce apparels with a high Sun Protection Factor (SPF). This can be achieved with apparel from bast fibers, such as linen and hemp, which also provide excellent comfort due to their high hygroscopicity, air permeability and other factors. The natural fibers, such as hemp and flax, contain in their chemical structure the natural pigment known as lignin, which is a natural UV absorber and ensures good sun protection. A study on the application of lignin, as UV blockers for fabrics, was conducted at the INF. The research has shown that changes in the level of lignin can cause large changes in the UV protection properties of linen fabrics."

...more here and here on the benefits of linen. Some of the science seems a little sketchy, maybe it's the translation, but we're just looking for thinly veiled excuses, anyway...

Speaking of thinly veiled excuses to buy linen - Jara folk - I have some red linen I picked up at war - $3/yard, first come first served at practice!

Maybe we should use hemp juice as sunblock... Or something.

Any chance I could get you to set some yardage aside for me? I've been wanting a red underskirt for my flemish for a while now!

It's a bit light for that - maybe 4 .5 oz? How much would you need?

Mmm if you think it'd be too light then nevermind. Your judgement, I trust it.

actually, I looked at it again, and it's about a 5oz after all. How much do you need?
Miss Katzarhooie on August 13th, 2009 01:07 pm (UTC)
Enough for an underskirt and maybe a set of work sleeves. Maybe 4, 5 yards? Does that sound about right?
