Sweet. Britain has banned the jackass who started the vaccines-cause-autism bullshit.

Now if we could just erase him from the time-space continuum; our pediatrician saw over 20 kids die from measles in PITTSBURG a few years back.

jtdiiijtdiii on May 25th, 2010 01:55 am (UTC)
Yeah, but he is living happily in the US still pushing his quack theories.
jtdiiijtdiii on May 25th, 2010 01:55 am (UTC)
Although it is nice to see them yank it. :)
Doug Hulick / Simon Morcarswords_and_pens on May 25th, 2010 02:01 am (UTC)
It'd be nice if they yanked his license here, too, but too many people are drinking his Kool-Aid for that to happen, I think.
birdkillerladybirdkiller on May 25th, 2010 04:11 am (UTC)
he doesn't have one here and never has according to the Wikipedia article.
former_callixte on May 25th, 2010 03:01 am (UTC)
Do you wanna know something really sad? Because of him, people working in THE MARSHFIELD CLINIC are telling people--such as my mom--not to get the flu shot or the H1N1 shot because the shot has nasty stuff in it and might cause you to get strange things. Because, hey, look at the shot that causes autism!!!! Of course they are off duty at not at the clinic when they are telling my mom this. I keep telling her it is a load of crap. But. ARRRGH!!!! Thank you for letting me rant.

Ugh. I hates the stoopid.
former_callixte on May 25th, 2010 03:29 am (UTC)
oh oh, i found a really nice summary of the sham dr's work! I don't know how to insert a live link into a comment (sorry), so you will have to cut and paste.

gah. My mother is still on me because I *gasp* had my child vaccinated.

Good on Britain... on the subject of vaccines... this spring, I was talking to my kids about the Spanish Influenza, and used the opportunity, as I traditionally do, to sell 'em on getting vaccines... and a scary number of my bright, clever students were all 'oh noes, we don't know what vaccines do'... argleargle...

It is so overdue. I wish we would ban him here. But I don't know if we'll ever recover from the damage he has caused. I posted that article this morning to a parenting group I'm on, and most people agree he is whackadoo, but some people are still defending him. Sad and scary.
world_rim_walkeworld_rim_walke on May 25th, 2010 06:51 am (UTC)
As others have said, good thing, only I'm not sure if we're going to see the end of his quackery.

One of my online friends (Well, I know her in RL but I rarely see her) is absolutely convinced that vaccines are bad. I tried to disagree and got attacked by her friends. Sigh. It bothers me so much that people won't give correctly performed studies credit over this nonsense.
Samirasamiratou on May 25th, 2010 01:18 pm (UTC)
Good sign, but too little, too late. It will take years to overcome the damage he's caused.

He needs to be thrown in jail. For murder.

You bet. Anyone who thinks ideas can't be dangerous should talk to a family whose child is disabled or dead due to a preventable childhood illness.

I wish I could let Darwin take care of it and say "Sure - ya don't believe in vaccines, don't get them. Face the disease. It's FAR nastier than what'll really happen from the vaccine." But they're compromising the herd immunity, and that makes me cranky.

Haven't smallpox and polio been essentially eliminated this same way?

If EVERYBODY got the vaccines scrupulously for about 10-20 years, there'd be no hosts for the nasties, they'd die out. Then nobody would need the scary vaccine for it anymore.

EllieSamelliesam on May 25th, 2010 05:36 pm (UTC)
Not fair to the kids who aren't able to make the choice. Stupid parents should be the ones penalized.
nearlyvalkyrienearlyvalkyrie on May 25th, 2010 09:32 pm (UTC)
Re: Darwin
Yeah...and that's the tragedy. The ones who make the bad decision don't bear the consequences.
world_rim_walkeworld_rim_walke on May 26th, 2010 01:36 pm (UTC)
You are quite right about not-immuned individuals compromising the "herd's" immunity. However, everyone being immuned doesn't mean that the disease is eliminated, you might just have a population of carriers. Also, I remember hearing of some isolated cases of "eliminated" diseases cropping up in odd places.
eithni: PharmDeithni on May 26th, 2010 02:19 pm (UTC)
Actually, it has to do with whether there is an environmental reservoir (ie tetanus) or other carrier animals (ie rabies). Diseases that have such a reservoir will never be eliminated and will always require vaccination for control. Diseases that are exclusively human may be eradicated via sustained immunization campaigns.

There's a big difference between being an adult and making your own choice about vaccines, and being a kid and having the choices made for you and then suffering for them.

It's child abuse if you don't let your child drink milk or eat meat because your vegan, but not child abuse when you deliberately let them get the measles?

I hate getting flu shots, but it has more to do with me rarely NOT being ill and not wanting to deal with a shot too when I'm sick than with quackery. Which reminds me that I have to set up for the Hep B shots AGAIN because I'm still not immune. :C

It looks like bad science + a chance to create a scapegoat = money for him and measles outbreaks. :C
