I wonder if she thought she needed to audition...
At work we serve a population of disabled and elderly folks. Many of them still reside in their homes and keeping them there is our goal. However, sometimes people cannot live independently and we try to place them in appropriately supportive environments. One of our more recently joined members is one of those people and has been resistant to the idea.

Yesterday, her team got a phone call from a community based residential facility (CBRF, essentially a low-needs nursing home) asking if there was anything we could do. Apparently, she had called the CBRF at least fifteen times that morning to say that she "heard from some people" that the CBRF "only takes people who are not in their right mind."

Honey, if that was a requirement, I think you just checked that box. :D

I had an elderly client once who wouldn't meet with me in her apartment because she thought it was bugged. Apparently her neighbor from like 10 years and a half a dozen residences ago had tracked her down to harrass her. She said they were pumping gas and dust into her apartment which made it hard to breathe and caused problems with her eyes. (That these symptoms corresponded with existing health issues she had was irrelevant.) They would also make tapping noises to let her know that they were listening to her. She even asked my advice once about clearing out her IRA to hire a private dectective. Despite the fact that the police knew who she was from all her calls, etc it took a surprisingly long time to get to the point where her daughter could invoke her medical power of attorney.

That's altogether too common, sadly. We want people to be autonomous for as long as possible, but sometimes it is very hard to prove that that time has past.

I worked for a CBRF! :) I loved working there, but I quit when we had 4 of our 8 people as high needs and only one staff on at a time. Two had gotten worse over time, one had always been that ways but had been okay when the rest were low needs, and one the worker lied through her teeth to get them in their. :C I didn't want to be liable for something that happened while I was helping a patient change or shower and NO ONE ELSE was there! This was prompted by a toaster fire and a serious fall at the same time.

Yeah, you've told me that story - it sounds like a well-meaning but understaffed place.

Yeah, I fail at new stories. I need to do new things and collect new stories. I'm kinda boring at the moment. :P

Sadly, I actually work next Friday. Thursday night I will be packing and probably frantically packing for 12th Night, but you could come keep me company after work if you wanted.

I sympathize with the lady.
Honestly, if actions were being taken to place me in a residence dedicated to dementia patients, I would be terrified, and I would do my damnest to make sure I didn't go there.

One of the most common maladies of the elderly is a failing of short-term memory. "My toothbrush is wet, so I must have brushed my teeth." So, she might not have kept track of just how often she was calling.

Re: I sympathize with the lady.
Yeah, I think Scott had it right - I bet she had a note "Call CBRF" and just called every time she saw it. :p
