Best. Hat. Ever.
I had the crappiest work day on record... until I got home. I had a package that entirely derailed my plan for the evening. I chucked my plans to work on the seventeen urgent projects and commissions I have on my plate and sewed a hat. Not just any hat, though, a beautiful, fabulous, Elizabethan embroidered coif... embroidered by my grandpa! Squee!

My grandpa has been cross-stitching pillowcases and tableclothes in recent years and awhile ago I got it into my head to ask him to do a piece for me. He initially protested that it was a little boring to use only black embroidery floss, but was willing to humor me when I insisted. The design is one of the attack_laurel's Extreme Costuming patterns. I stitched it up with a lining to protect the embroidery and embroidered my name, barony, and kingdom on the inside so it will always find its way home, but all the exterior embroidery was done by my grandpa. I am so utterly pleased! I'll need to find an excuse to wear my Spanish gown sometime soon.

A detail of the pattern. I chose this one because of all the fruits and vegetables and insects reminded me of my grandma's truly epic garden that she had every summer when I was a child.

Left and right views...

And this last one, it's not a particularly great picture of me or the coif, but for some reason it feels very Holbein-esque, so I kept it.

Wow! You look like you're posing for a painting by a Dutch master...

I know! Completely by accident - it's just a crappy arm's length cell phone shot, but there's something just right about how it came out.

I think it's the angle of your face and the way the light hits your nose and eyes. I agree that it's very reminiscent of a Hans Holbein portrait. And the hat totally rocks.

Oh, how wonderful to have a grandparent who will work with you on such a project!

Yup. My grandpa is a really wonderful and special man. I am blessed.

And yes very reminiscent of Holbein.

I agree, best hat ever. This is so cool, and is a creation you'll treasure forever.

This is the epitome of how cool being able to make your own art/stuff/artifacts is.

Wow, how cool is it that a grandpa cross-stitches and doesn't care who knows it?

Your Grampa ROCKS. Heck with Spanish - I'd be wearing that with my jeans or my Norse, just so I could wear it!

I did wear it to work yesterday... and SCA practice... and out to the bar where we go for social practice. :)~
