Writer's Block: Your own toy story
Did you have a favorite stuffed animal, action figure, or doll growing up? If so, what was it and what happened to it?

I had a special doll and cat-shaped pillow, inventively named "Dolly" and "Kitty" respectively. I still have them, safely boxed up and on the top shelf in the furnace room in my basement. I can still imagine how Dolly feels in my arms and the fuzzy coat of Kitty.

It's odd how these things linger... one of the most powerful memories from my childhood is the particular smell of my not-too-cleverly-named 'purple and green bunny'. Makes me feel all warm and snuggle just imagining it.

I had a stuffed dog, named Elvis after the beagle that we had when I was a baby (I believe he was originally a carnival prize that my father won for my mother before I was born). By the time I reached adolescence, he was in pretty fragile shape and his once-pink coat was a grubby grayish shade, but I still have him carefully wrapped up in a storage cupboard above my bedroom closet.

Not a critter, but I still have my baby blanket. It was originally a red quilt (I think), but by the time I was 8 or so, it was in pretty bad shape, so Mom took me to the fabric store to pick fabric to cover it. I chose a lilac for one side and a fuchsia for the other (yes, hideous, I know). It's in my closet and I still pull it out on cold winter nights.

In the top of my closet is still my firehouse dog stuffed animal. I don't remember what I called him except for Firehouse Dog. He no longer has eyes or nose or mouth bits, so he's a bit impressionistic now. But there he remains, waiting for a new caretaker.
