Settling in

The new budgie has been in the big cage since Saturday, but tonight Nechtan finally seems to be warming up to him. He's starting giving the new guy the nickel tour and playing with him. Alba, well, Alba just seems pleased that Nechtan has stopped incessantly chasing her and she can just chill out on her favorite, easily defensible perch.

Previously, Nechtan had always greeted new members of the flock enthusiastically, but he'd been being unusually reserved and distrustful... I think Sara had it right, though. It wasn't the new guy, it was that this is the first time Nechtan has encountered a new budgie without his buddy Derelei, and therefore the first time he *might* need to be an alpha. I'm not sure if he'll end up acting like an alpha, but they're at least acting like friends.

On a related note, the new guy is getting a new name - we are going with Ceó - Scots Gaelic for "mist" - since he's a light blue and grey.

And now there's a truly impressive amount if chattering and bell-ringing! I've never had such a pastel flock but at least they're all pastel and peaceful... if no longer quiet. ;)

The bluest one is actually Nechtan. The grey one beside him is Ceó.

Sher...Ceo came into our house as the baby bird, and so has always been the follower. I don't expect him to be willing to step into the alpha role should Nechtan demure...Ceo's more of a delta, or maybe even an omega. ;)

Glad they're getting along, tho. Noise is good! He's been so quite since losing Hawkwood, I take that as a great sign.

Nectan came as an abused and neglected baby and Derelei was an ALPHA, so this could be an interesting flock. :p

They had all been unnaturally quiet this week, so the noise level abruptly spiking does seem to be a good sign. There has been definite sharing of toys, too, so I think the boys will get on just fine after all.
