A Word of the Day as I plan for a trip to India
This seemed well-timed! I am planning a trip to India for this fall and so have been doing a lot of reading/research so I am not a cultural idiot by the time I get there.

ahimsa  \uh-HIM-sah\  noun
: the Hindu and Buddhist doctrine of refraining from harming any living being

Did you know?
"Ahimsa" has been part of the English language since at least the late 19th century, but the word didn't gain the attention of the English-speaking world until the first half of the 20th century, when it was recognized as an important component of the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. "Ahimsa" comes from a Sanskrit word meaning "noninjury," and Gandhi's policy of nonviolent protest played a crucial role in the political and social changes that eventually led to India's independence from Britain in 1947.

You're going to India? Verily, I am faint with envy.

Duh - just as many silk saris as customs will let you out of the country with! ;)

Silk ones, obviously - the louder the better - with gold borders and potentially woven patterns! You can make awesome outfits cutting up a 9 yard sari. And still have yards of trim for future tunics!

I know there's different names for different types, but I couldn't tell you what is what. I will take whatever you can reasonably get your hands on, but understand if you have to travel back light or have lots of shoppers on your list. ;)

The official Plan is to take a carry on there and then bring back my ENTIRE baggage allowance (TWO checked bags and a carry on, gods bless Lufthansa) filled with tea, spices, silk, saris, and handwovens. :D I'll be buying as much as I can and then bringing it to events to distribute!
