The Wonder of War
I've been in the Society for something like 16 years now and while I have not been to War EVERY year, I certainly have made it most years. No matter the challenges or trials, I always look forward to War and always am renewed by the excitement of community and learning that imbue every moment of the Pennsic experience. Even so, it has become something that I am in a way used to - it is still exciting, but does not always rise to being the thrilling experience it once was.

This year, I spent an evening taking care of Miss Em while her momma attended to other duties and, when the hour grew late, I crawled into bed with her and cuddled up for the night. Her momma came to claim her around 2:30AM and while mightyjesse took the wagon to the waiting golf cart, I scooped up the bebe and wrapped her in a little blankie for the ride home. She woke up as I carried her through camp - the night illuminated by moonlight on so much white canvas, the residents all asleep amidst the low fog that crept across camp.

Her eyes wide in wonder, Em looked around and then whispered, as if not wanting to break the spell - "Eiffie... we're at the Pennsic!"

I paused for a moment, struck by the awe in her voice, and then I perceived it too - the clear starlight, the cold dew on my feet, the smell of smoke heavy in the air, the breeze teasing my hair, and the magic that flowed all through the camp.

"Yes, yes, we are," I whispered back at her, "and it is a wonderful thing."

Such is the power of fresh and innocent eyes... though she cannot know it, I am indebted to Miss Em for opening my eyes to that very special Pennsic Magic Moment.

That's one of the Pennsic moments I love best :-) They're quiet, and often fleeting, but if I slow down enough, one will usually cozy up with me for a few timeless minutes.
