Poor budgie...

*sigh* My poor elderly Nechtan is still pretty active and happy, despite being eleven years old or so, but had been exhibiting some strange behaviors lately. Today he was hanging out at the front of the cage and I noticed that his eyes don't match - one is subtly cloudy. After observing him some more and doing some walking around the cage to see how he tracked movement, I really suspect that the poor little guy is blind (or at least has a serious vision deficit) in his right eye. I suppose there's nothing really to be done and it doesn't seem to be bothering him much, but I'll have to keep a close eye on him. :/

If you put an eye-patch on him, does he get to wear a teeny little pirate on his shoulder?

Heehee. That would be awesome!

Poor birdy. Cataracts are not uncommon in elderly creatures. I have known dogs and cats to live quite happily in familiar surroundings for years after losing their eyesight.

Well, I already can't move stuff in the cage because of Alba's autistic-type issues, so there at least won't be major changes to his environment.

Aww... poor little fluff bird... but if he's cheerful, I suppose it just means that he needs to fly with caution?

I've actually not been letting them out much because Nechtan has not been able to reliably fly across the room for the last few months. He's hit things (that may have been vision issues setting in) and also has real trouble maintaining altitude, so he can only be out when I can actively watch him. :/

But, yes, inside the cage he's still a very happy budgie boy... currently cheeping his fool head off, and alternately trying to molest Ceo' or stuff his face with birdie treats that the niblings brought them. :)

Poor little guy. Sorry to hear he's having eye trouble, but glad that he's otherwise a happy birdie. I know he's being well looked after. :)
