Althing, n. The parliament of Iceland. Pronunciation: Brit. /ˈɔːlθɪŋ/, U.S. /ˈɔlˌθɪŋ/, /ˈɑlˌθɪŋ/

Etymology: <  Icelandic alþingi (Old Icelandic alþingi, alþing) < al-, all-, combining form of allr all, whole (see all adj.) + þing assembly (see thing n.1).

The parliament of Iceland.
The Althing was founded in 930 at Þingvellir (about 25 miles east of Reykjavik), and is the oldest extant parliament in the world. It was originally composed of chieftains of the Icelandic commonwealth who met periodically for the purpose of law-making. In 1845 it was moved to Reykjavik, and is now an elected unicameral assembly.

I've been to Thingvellir! So cool! Historical context, amazing local geology, and tectonic nexus all in one. Freaking awesome. Island: sheep, Vikings, and gorgeously raw geology everywhere you go. Swoon. </p>

Oh, and if you need a break, it might sound kind of overpolished, but the blue mineral springs between the airport and downtown make for some incredible soaking, esp in the evening. :)
